About

Hand dyed yarn from the heart of Folkestone.

Established in 2015 within the heart of Folkestone's Creative Quarter and just a stones throw from the Harbour, Folkestone Harbour Yarn is a dye studio committed to producing quality hand dyed yarns that are original, unique, sustainable and kind to the environment, whilst supporting British farmers and other small businesses.

We started as an occasional craft fair participant with just a handful of quirky colourful sock yarns on offer and have grown into an established online small business with a wide range of yarn bases and weights available (many of them from British sheep breeds).

In 2016 we added our Natural Dyes range and started a dye garden in order to ensure our dyes were sourced as locally as possible. 2018 saw the addition of a knitting notions range inspired by our resident Studio Cat. Originally cut from waste acrylic that a local manufacturer wished to recycle, we have now partnered with another small independent business based in Folkestone's Creative Quarter for our laser cutting needs.

Following customer feedback, we added a range of sustainable bamboo knitting needles, hand finished with charming and colourful ceramic and glass beads in 2019. These are made to order by another small independent based on the South Coast, which fits our ethos of aiding the environment through minimal travel miles, helps support our local economy and ensures every pair is unique.

Pre-Covid19, F.H.Y. appeared at Independent Yarn Festivals such as Unravel and Yarningham, and have also been featured in Mollie Makes and Knitting magazine.

We hope our yarns, kits and knitting accessories bring you many hours of happy making and that the finished products are used/worn for many years to come.

We would love to see your finished projects, so please follow us on Instagram (@folkestoneharbouryarn) or Facebook (Folkestone Harbour Yarn) and share images of what you have been up to with us!
