Trysail is a simple scarf, suitable for a beginner or someone looking for an easy and relaxing knit to do whilst watching TV. Named for the small traditional triangular mainsail used by sailboats in high winds, this scarf will keep your neck and shoulders warm on windy beach walks and cold winter days.
This scarf is knitted in garter stitch with 2 strands of sock weight yarn held together to create a marled shimmer, reminiscent of a hazy seaside horizon.
Size:
Small: 164cm length (184cm with tassels), 30cm at widest point, cast off edge 70cm. Large: 181cm length (206cm with tassels), 38cm at widest point, cast off edge 80cm. Measurements taken after blocking.
Skill Level:
Beginner/Easy. Skills needed are cast on, knit, garter stitch and simple increases.
Tools needed:
- This pattern is designed for 200-300g of sock weight yarn, knit using 2 strands held together. Small size uses 200g, large size uses 250-300g.
- 4mm circular needles, at least 60cm wide. Optional: 4mm crochet hook.
- One stitch marker to mark increases.
- Large needle for weaving in ends.
-Tape measure or ruler.
Yarn Substitutes:
200G of any sock weight (425m per 100g) remnants, minis or leftovers will do if you wish to make your own colourway up.
Gauge:
Gauge is somewhat important otherwise you may run out of yarn. This is critical if you are using exactly 200g of yarn to make your scarf or you wish to recreate this pattern exactly. If you are using remnants and leftovers from other projects then you might not be overly concerned with gauge. The ideal gauge uses 2 strands of FHY sock held together knitted on 4mm needles and is 5½ stitches and 9 rows per inch after blocking. See techniques section if you are unfamiliar with tension squares or any other techniques used here.
