'Easter Bunny'. A variegated merino blend sock yarn in muted 'fluffy bunny coat' browns with flashes of pastel pink, green, blue and yellow.
Bio-Nylon Sock Yarn Base 100g:
75% merino wool, 25% bio-nylon. 100g= 350m (approx). Recommended needles 3.25-3.75mm. Tension 24 sts per 10cm.
This colour is available on other yarn bases elsewhere in our shop.
As colours can differ slightly between batches, we recommend purchasing enough yarn to finish your project from the same batch. If your desired number of skeins are not available on your chosen base, please message us and we will dye the needed quantity.
ABOUT BIO-NYLON:
Bio-nylon takes 5 years to decompose instead of 50-100 years, and can be turned into biomass and biogas.
Will it affect the wear and longevity of my handmade garments?
No. Bio-nylon performs in the same way as what I'm calling 'standard' nylon under normal washing and wearing circumstances. It will not start to disintegrate or break down whilst being hand or machine washed and worn or stored in your wardrobe.
What makes it more environmentally friendly then?
Bio-nylon has been designed to decompose 10 x faster than standard nylon and biodegrades in 5 years instead of 50-100. This happens only when buried in landfill, which is an environment with no oxygen and bacteria that can 'eat' the fibre and turn it in to biomass and biogas (which can be used to generate energy). This reduces the amount of waste left on the planet for future generations to deal with.
Is it free of toxic substances?
Yes, it is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Class 1 Certified, which guarantees the absence of substances which could harm the health of adults, children and babies.
Is it made in the U.K.?
Not yet. This Bio-nylon is made by an Italian company. The fibre is imported into the U.K. where it is blended and spun in to yarn by a Yorkshire based mill. Usually, I avoid products with a relatively high travel footprint, but given the benefits of bio-nylon I have made an exception. My hope is that the second generation of bio-fibre products will be developed by companies closer to home.
How can I find out more information?
A link to the website of the company that produce this Bio-nylon can be found here>> biodegradable nylon - AMNI SOUL ECO®, Fulgar
Folkestone Harbour Yarn is committed to minimising the environmental impact of our products and our business practice, and so I am always looking for ways to make changes. It has taken several years to track down a suitable alternative to standard nylon and I hope that more companies invest in eco-alternatives in the future.
Care and washing:
Gentle hand washing of hand dyed and hand knitted/crocheted items is recommended. Yarns marked superwash can be machine washed at 30 degrees, but I personally prefer hand washing in warm water using a mild detergent before lying flat to dry (no-rinse wool specific products such as eucalan or soak are great for this). Please note that hand-dyed yarns may shed a little colour when first washed. This does not affect the fastness of the colour, and is due to excess loose dye particles.
We do custom requests:
Please note that custom requests such as a different base yarn or in larger quantities are easily achieved with no 'custom' surcharge added to the price. I am happy to oblige if I can, just message me and i'll quote you a cost and time scale.
